President and Founder, Tracy Copeland was a recipient herself. Since her liver transplant, it has become her mission and strongest desire to share her experience and accomplishments as a transplant recipient. She continues to share the success of organ transplants by telling her story and raising awareness for the growing need for Donation and Research. Together with her Donor’s Mother Kathy, they continue to share their experiences, encouraging families and loved ones to discuss organ donation.
They are able to accomplish their mission through community outreach programs including their signature Donor Walk which highlights success, honors the donors and their families, and educates our community about the need for organ and tissue donation. Sierra Nevada Donor Awareness continues to help anyway they can, offering education opportunities for individuals whose lives have been significantly impacted by organ and tissue donation. As well as providing support to individuals seeking or supporting organ transplantations as well as transplant recipients.
We all have one common goal and that is to help others learn about the true need our communities have for donors. For some of us, we have a family member that is a recipient or a donor and for others, we have lost loved ones due to a need and know the importance of organ and tissue donation firsthand. The examples go on and on. Without donors, many of our lives would be so different and we need to continue to encourage people to donate to life. Sierra Nevada Donor Awareness shares the need and utilizes every opportunity to increase awareness and dispel misconceptions surrounding organ and tissue donation.
Team Dolan has been impacted and made aware of what organ and tissue donation really means. We have experienced the gift of life through Tom’s story, Tracy’s story, and many others through attending the Donor Walk. Without donors, many of our lives would be so different. Consider this, every 9 minutes people are added to the waitlist for transplants. A single donor can save up to 8 lives through organ donation, restore sight to 2 people through cornea donation, and heal as many as 75 lives through tissue donation.
Signing up to be an organ donor provides hope to thousands of men, women, and children waiting for a 2nd chance at life. There are many whose lives are lost but also many who can gain the gift of life.
