Through the Dolan Philanthropy Spotlight, we aim to shine a light on organizations in Northern Nevada that promote the welfare of our community. This month we are turning the spotlight on CARE Chest. Their mission is to serve Nevadans in need by providing medical resources free of charge.
Founded over 30 years ago, three local pharmacists Bill Kahl, Alex Rassuchine, and Craig Collins recognized a great need in our community. Many people were going without the medical equipment they needed because their insurance wouldn’t cover it or they could not afford to buy it out of pocket. In correlation, they noticed others in the community who didn't know what to do with gently used medical equipment -which was typically stored or thrown away. By collecting, recycling, refurbishing, then loaning gently used equipment to people in need CARE Chest was born.
Today, through their programs CARE Chest serves over 15,000 consumers per year. Over the past 32 years, they have helped nearly 400,000 individuals. Here are a few of the programs they offer:
- Medical Equipment & Supplies, durable medical equipment is loaned for as long as it is needed. Consumable items such as incontinence supplies and non-prescription items can be re-ordered monthly for consumers who qualify.
- Prescription Assistance, CARE Chest provides up to $300 per client annually for approved prescriptions (eg., cardiac, diabetic, antibiotic, pulmonary, or psychotropic medication)
- Diabetic Supplies, this program distributes testing supplies, including blood glucose monitors, test strips, syringes, and lancets. Supplies are available monthly with a prescription.
- Supplemental Medical Nutrition, provides doctor-prescribed supplemental medical nutrition such as Ensure, Glucerna, Pediasure, and Instant Breakfast to consumers on a monthly basis.
Programs are available across 11 counties in Northern Nevada including Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lander, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, Storey, Washoe, and White Pine.

In addition, each year CARE Chest organizes its signature fundraising event– Bacon Bourbon and Brews. Local distillers and brewers come together to provide tastes of beer, bourbon and you guessed it- bacon-themed creations to snack on! Team Dolan would love for you to join this fun-filled event to raise funds for the critical work CARE Chest does in our community. CARE Chest is an incredibly important organization to the Dolan Family. Tom Dolan was a founding Board Member and continues to be involved to this day on the Advisory board.
