Jump-Start Basics: Learn How to Temporarily Fix a Dead Battery

Almost every driver has to deal with a dead battery eventually. That's why it's important to understand the basics of jump-starting your battery. As long as you have access to jumper cables and a car with a usable battery, a simple jump-start may help you drive your car home.

To facilitate the process, bring the cars as close together as possible, with their noses almost touching. Turn both cars off, and then attach the jumper cables to the two car batteries. The positive clamps are attached to the positive battery terminals, and vice versa. Once the cables are attached, turn on the engine of the car with the healthy battery, and allow it to run for several minutes. Then try to start the engine of the car with the dead battery——you may have to turn the key a few times before you succeed.
